January - 2023 A Cup of Comfort Graph-Along

Where are all my coffee fans, tea aficionados, and cocoa lovers? The theme for this year is a big steaming mug of comfort. A new graph will be released monthly featuring a themed mug, Starting in January with a snowflake. If you do not want to do holiday or season themes, I will be including a birthstone option as well for each month. Some months will also include bonus graphs such as the year mug included this month. Do all, do some, do one. This is your creation, your journey.

As you can see in the above picture I chose to do the January graph in both Intarsia (sc graphing) and Corner to Corner (C2C) to show the size difference of the two. As you can see the C2C version is much larger that the Intarsia version. I used a size 4 weight yarn and a 5.5mm crochet hook for both. The C2C square is approximately 15.5” wide and 21” high, the Intarsia square is 5.5” wide and 7” high. Depending on the size of the project you want to create, the amount of yarn you want to use, and the time you have to complete your squares you can decide which option or options are right for you.

The graph can be used in an array of different forms. It can be done in single crochet graphing (Intarsia), bobble or popcorn graphing, C2C and tapestry crochet. There are many great video tutorials on YouTube for each type of crochet graphing. The Crochet Crowd does a great beginner video on “How To Crochet Graphghans for Beginners” and “Crochet Corner to Corner (C2C) Graphghans for Beginners”. My Hobby is Crochet have a great video called “How to crochet GRAPHS with the BOBBLE SINGLE CROCHET”. Yarnjoy also does a great video on the C2C method changing colors called “How to handle color changes in C2C Graphghans”. If this is your first time doing a graphghan I suggest watching a few videos and deciding what style is best for you before you begin.

Remember these crocheted graphs can be attached together to form a blanket at the end of the year, Turned into wall hangings, Attached together and stuffed to make a pillow, and turned into a table runner by attaching them end to end or even a sweater or bag. The options are only limited by your imagination.

For this months squares the yarn I used is:

Background: Red Heart Aran

Cup: Red Heart Light Periwinkle

Design: Red Heart White

Steam: Red Heart Cafe Latte

You can of course always use whatever color combinations and yarn you prefer.

What about those of you who do not want to crochet but still want to join in the fun? There are many options for graphs to be used in other materials such as plastic canvas, beading, cross-stitch, diamond art, and perler beads to name a few. Any art form where a graph is used to create a picture these graphs can be used. Explore your creativity and do multiple projects or choose the art form that is best for you.

Be sure to share your finished projects on The Pastel Blonde Facebook page, link located at the top and bottom of this page. I love seeing everyone’s beautiful creations.
