Leprechaun House

In my family we have a tradition of making Leprechaun houses for St. Patrick’s Day and I wanted to share this tradition with all of you.

Let’s start with a little background on how this tradition got started. One Christmas about 7 years ago I had bought a gingerbread house village kit to do for the holidays and as the holidays always do it got busy and I forgot that I had the kit. Fast forward to January and I found the kit in my pantry but now what. I didn’t want to throw it away and didn’t know if it would last a whole year, so an idea was formed. Who could use a little house? Well, a Leprechaun of course! We had always had a pesky Leprechaun who would come a cause trouble around the house on St. Patrick’s eve and leave chocolate coins for the kids to find in the morning, but what if this year we actual built him or her a house to take a nap in?

That year I went to the store and purchased a bunch of rainbow candies, Twizzlers, Skittles, Rainbow ropes, etc... and when March rolled around, we got together with friends and had all the kids make little Leprechaun houses. It was a big hit and on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day the Leprechaun had left chocolate gold coins at the from door. A new tradition was born!

For this fun easy project you will need a gingerbread house or village kit, rainbow candies of various shapes and sizes, colored cereals, or Rainbow sprinkles (Shots/Jimmies). Another fun addition is to use green food coloring to dye coconut flakes to use as grass around your house. (Don’t forget the Leprechaun will bring chocolate coins for the kiddos in the morning)

I always start by building the structure in advance, so it has time to dry and set up before decorating. This is especially important if you are making them with young children because it can be frustrating if the building keeps falling as they decorate.

Now comes the fun part…. decorating!

This can be a family activity or invite a bunch of kids to have a Leprechaun house building party. In my family the adults have as much fun as the kids do and we often do a whole Leprechaun village.

Here is a picture of a Leprechaun House Building Party we had a few years ago. The kids had a great time being creative and playing with candy.
